If, lacking ethical conduct, one fails to achieve one’s own purpose, the wish to accomplish others’ purpose is laughable. Therefore, guarding ethics devoid of aspirations for worldly existence is the Bodhisattvas’ practice.

The Six Far-Reaching Attitudes

A Bodhisattva’s practice is
To safeguard ethical self-discipline without worldly intents,
Because, if we can’t fulfill our own purposes without ethical discipline,
The wish to fulfill the purposes of others is a joke.
