A bird greets me for another glorious day

For the first time in my life, a bird greeted me outside my bedroom window as I contemplated whether to get out of bed earlier today.

It was 6 a.m. in the morning! A little too early for my taste, so I just rolled over and rested my head against the two pillows I had piled up on one side of the bed. (They help prop me up when I watch television many hours later.)

I felt a little like St. Francis of Assisi who was known to preach to the birds. Someone had actually recorded the sermon he gave almost a thousand years ago. He is my favorite saint and I have a statue of him in the side yard of my house with a bird in one hand as he is stretching the other hand lower to welcome a little white rabbit.

The legend holds that St. Francis encounters a large flock of birds and he speaks to them, urging all to praise God for their freedom, their beauty, and the gifts of nature. He refers to them as “my little sisters, emphasizing his view of all creatures as part of God’s creation.

Sparrows flock to my yard where I place bird seed in a feeder that hangs from an old plum tree. There are openings for four of my fine-feathered friends to chow down and it is exciting to see them flap their wings at the feeding birds to get them to move so they can eat as they fly away.

Sometimes a bird will fly into my eight-foot partitioned window in the dining room. None have ever gotten seriously hurt or passed away. I am grateful that they feel comfortable just outside of my house which is 150 years old.

But a bird was not the only animal that greeted me this morning. A black and white female cat named “Skunk” pranced up my bed at 5 o’clock each morning, gazed into my eyes, and felt love when I petted her. She purred and rested her two front paws on my stomach for a few moments, satisfied that life would go on as glorious as it had in the days, the weeks, and the years before the bird called out to me.

I have had your post saved in my inbox to read when I came back to blog this month. This is the second post this morning sharing the beauty of our connections with animals, and birds in particular.

I have seen a number of blue birds lately, they are truly beautiful. I once read that when a bluebird appears to pay attention to what you have been thinking about. That blue birds of messengers to bring understanding and a reminder of the greater connection to spirit. I love this idea.

You paint a lovely scene. I hope you have had a wonderful start to your morning.

Animals are our friends and families. I remember when my father-in-law stayed over in our house when we were away and how my dog Willie not only climbed into bed with him, but burrowed his way beneath the covers!

With Spring finally here, I have begun to notice a bird chirping as I enter my second-floor bathroom. The window is just slightly above the bird-feeeder some 15 feet away and I feel as if he (she?) is greeting me and happy to know that they will soon be fed.
