Any veteran that took part in the January 6th insurrection at the US capitol should be stripped of his or her VA benefits and labeled a “traitor.”
There is a disturbing number of current and former military persons identified among those who broke into the capitol to overturn the election. About 20 percent of the nearly 300 arrested, according to NPR. They should no longer receive treatment at VA hospitals, get the GI Bill for attending school or obtain a mortgage loan.
They have acted against the United States by taking part in a rebellion and should be viewed as turncoats who have betrayed their country and the Constitution that all of us veterans vowed to protect and follow upon our enlistment.
Congressman Ruben Gallegos, a combat Marine Corps veteran, has contacted the head of the VA as well as Homeland Security and Attorney General Merrick Garland to seek action against the veterans who betrayed our country. The Democratic congressman from Arizona, who is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, has suggested that all forego disability compensation, educational benefits, access to health care, employment opportunities and access to veteran-affiliated state programs.
The US Code governs benefits for veterans and their dependents. Under Sections 6104 and 6105, veterans and other individuals receiving VA benefits who commit mutiny or treason or who are convicted of ‘subversive activities,’ as listed in Section 6105(b), forfeit their right to VA benefits.”

I would go further and suggest the government publish the names of the traitors in the newspapers and identify them on television and the radio. Contact their bosses where they work and the churches their families attend decrying them as traitors and deserters of the worst order.
Remember that five people were killed in the attack on the Capital building. One was a police officer.
No veteran should have taken part in such a heinous action, let alone follow the instructions of a draft-dodging coward.
I appreciate your passion but I’ve gotta disagree about VA benefits. I reckon they should be unconditional to all who qualify – even convicted criminals. Could you imagine what might happen under a future Trumpist government should they become politicised?

Convicts should be given VA benefits but persons charged with insurrection and/or treason should not receive any assistance in my book.

Well, peace activists and whistleblowers are often condemned as traitors. I’d hate to see someone like Chelsea Manning denied VA benefits for being convicted – never mind just charged.

I am a vet and served my country just like all other veterans have. I don’t think it is fair to criticise or shout foul to others just because you don’t agree. Jan 6 lasted one day. Those who didn’t like Trump and wanted him impeached, from day one, continued this same thing for 4 years. I’ve never heard anyone condemn any of this. I don’t agree with what took place Jan 6 at the capital, but I will not condemn someone elce for his or her convictions, especially a veteran.

Good point and I respect your opinion.
But those who were against Trump never broke the law, assaulted police, or threatened to overturn an election they wrongfully believed was “stolen” from their leader. We all have the right to protest as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution. But not a violent protest as some of these veterans took part in and have been arrested by law enforcement agents for their betrayal to their country.

That people think that “people didn’t’ like tRump” are in denial as to all the reasons that were evident way before he went on the Ballot to run for President of the United States. Learn and read all the “facts” about this persons character, and lack of, and competence to be an effective leader. Look no further than Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz’s words in 2016, and ask what changed. It is a very willfully ignorant position to take that Donald Trump was disliked, and not given a chance. He had more chances than anyone in history, and look at what his administration left, not because he was hated. Anyone who doesn’t see the horrendous acts on Jan, 6, as an attack on Democracy, is in hopelessly blind. I feel sorry for anyone who cannot realize what is true and real, and this is a great source of the anger and division in America.

I agree with you that Americans gave the former guy all the chances in the world yet he never changed or became presidential.
He was the worst president we ever had and has hurt our country in so many ways. I feel bad for the old Republican Party that succumbed to him and continue to follow him.

Here, here ! Well said, Every veteran who participated broke their oath, abdicating all the implicit and explicit rights and privileges … Shunning is an ancient practice that should be brought back for those who would desecrate their nation sacred ground.

Shunning.
I haven’t heard if that term in such a long time. I think it could apply but I wonder if the American Legion or the VFW lodges would approve of such actions?

Thank You Michael for saying what every American should be hollering at the top of their lungs! I am dumbfounded how few are upset over Jan. 6! America is in deep trouble, and needs voices like yours to rise up!

It just ain’t right for any veteran to take part in such actions against our own country. I am deeply disturbed by the rebellion and believe that Justice will deal with these traitors in the coming months.

I am praying for truth and justice to prevail, yet so far, I am not feeling very optimistic, as these Republicans have too many “bad actors” who seem to be in Putin’s hands, as well as dark money, and great people like Jamie Raskin, Adam Shiff, et. al., are not respected. Too many in this country don’t understand courage and character are far better human traits than loud and aggressive bullies, as that “orange stain” of a president brought out! Only time will tell, and God help America 🇺🇸🙏

Yes, time will tell, but with Merrick Garland in charge I believe we will see an outcome we can support and be proud of once again.
