Altar Boy Sensing the Presence of God
I felt that I was Touched by God or the Power of the Universe when I was an altar boy. I may not have experienced my divine connection had I not just met a 12-year-old girl and ended up two days later praying for her love on a kneeler in the sacristy of a church.
The girl had taught me how to French Kiss. I knew nothing about this type of “smooching” but I wanted so much to be with her and share our everyday lives.
I went to church on a Sunday wearing my black cassock and white surplus and I folded my hands together. I prayed that she would “like me” and then – all of a sudden – I felt that it didn’t matter. The Presence of God seem to surround me and I knew – right then and there – that I was already loved by and in God. No one could ever ask for anymore. And I never saw the girl anymore but heard from her some 60 years later when she responded to a Blog post I wrote.
Feeling God’s Presence While Airborne
The second spiritual awakening occurred some 10 years later when I jumped out of an airplane for my first parachute jump. I felt a little afraid as I followed the instructions to stand up, hook up. and shuffle to the door of the plane and then all my fears disappeared. Once again, I became “One with the Universe” as I gazed at the blue sky around me and the clouds on my way to the earth below. I was less afraid to face the enemy that awaited me in Vietnam a few weeks later.

I wanted all of the other paratroopers to experience being “One with God” and get the same uplifting feeling in their first jump, It was not what I would call a religious type of feeling. It was a spiritual encounter which I opened myself to very knowingly.
Neither experience would have happened had I not been an altar boy and later a soldier jumping out of an airplane.
My Son’s Adoption Evolves from a Newspaper
My son Nicholas came to me in a synchronistic fashion when his biological mother read a newspaper with an ad my wife and I took out seeking to adopt a child. Nicholas was born in Cleveland, Ohio, which did not permit such adoption ads to appear in the state’s newspapers.
His mother, however got a copy of a newspaper from Pennsylvania where her father had recently left the Keystone State to visit her bringing along the newspaper from the city of Erie, PA. Nicholas’ mother called three persons who took out the ads in that newspaper and she settled on me and my wife because the first two people she called were women, and the last one was a male – yours truly!
She was looking for a man to help raise her soon-to-be son!
I don’t see how anyone could simply call this a coincidence. It’s synchronicity at work.

I love how these first two experiences involve your being more deeply surrendered to the earth of your body. The first experience drew you towards all that awakens within when our sexuality beckons us out onto the dance floor. And how beautiful that you found the presence of the Divine as a result of yearning, of desire. In the second experience, you let go and opened up to the beauty, the resonance found as we open our hearts to the natural, and the risky…not unlike the first experience.
And then your son. How beautiful to experience the mutual nurturing parenting becomes and to have found it through a series of unlikely events. And once again, you took that leap, didn’t you? Truly, to parent is to risk everything in love.
Your words here remind me that as we go openly and fearlessly into the depths of this being human, there we find union within, resonance & communion with the heart of our Creator, and we find unity with each other as we let go of the idea that we must figure it all out and map out a big plan of attack for our many successes.
I look forward to the next post! Thank you for sharing…

You are so correct: We don’t have to figure it all out but simply “let go” and be open in the present moment

It’s synchronicity to find your words here Michael, to know your Spirit is still shining in this world, when we need all the Light bearers we can find!
I can imagine the energy we shared when we meditated together at St Paul’s.
Keep shining and sharing Love 💖🙏🌟Rebecca
