Old love songs morph into new spirituals

 You’re the Reason I’m Living

You’re The Reason I’m Livin’
You’re the breath that I take
You’re the stars in my heaven
You’re the sun when I wake.

You’re The Reason I’m Livin’
Oh, you carry me through
All of lifes little burdens
I’d be lost without you.

A long, long time ago
When I was down
Oh, You picked me up and showed me
True love still could be found

You’re the reason I do things
You’re the things that I do
You’re The Reason I’m Livin’
I’d be lost without you.

Come and tell me again…..

You’re The Reason I’m Livin’
Oh, you carry me through
All of life’s little burdens
I’d be lost without you.

— *Walden Robert Cassotto,  1963
 * — “You’re the Reason I’m Living” is a 1963 single by Bobby Darin,  aka, Walden Robert Cassotto, from his album of the same nameWikipedia
Songs take on new meanings with age

When your hear some songs, you know they’re inspirational right off the bat. “You Light Up My Life,” “Bridge Over Troubled Waters,” “I Believe” are just a few they sang over an old microphone.

But, looking back from a less romantic perspective, I’m beginning to see a more “spiritual” take on songs of my youth. Take this Bobby Darin song above. You can sing it, or say the words from it, as if the lines were a prayer. Not to some “Queen of the Hop” or a “Mack the Knife,” but to the Higher Self, the One Who’s Consciousness provides an abundance of “reasons for living.”

Thought I put this out there. I’m sure there are other inspirational/spiritual tunes masquerading as old Rock & Roll songs. Have to start digging through my collections of 45s and LP records. Or, maybe,  seek them through my memory and the help of the Google Genie.

(” . . . you’re the breath that I take . . .” Wow!)

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

Tonight you’re mine completely
You give your love so sweetly
Tonight the light of love is in your eyes
But will you love me tomorrow?

Is this a lasting treasure
Or just a moment’s pleasure?
Can I believe the magic of your sighs?
Will you still love me tomorrow?

 Tonight with words unspoken
You say that I’m the only one
But will my heart be broken
When the night meets the morning sun?

I’d like to know that your love
Is love I can be sure of
So tell me now, and I won’t ask again
Will you still love me tomorrow?

— Gerry Goffin and Carole King — 1960

Could insert my Beloved” in exchange for all the places the word “you” appears, and it could be another Sufi way of longing, yearning to be with the Higher Self.

Lykke Li Recorded a version in July 2009. The French Kicks included a recording of it in their 2009 EP Covers. Can you believe some radio stations banned this song when it first came out because they felt it was too “sexually charged?” ( wikipedia: Will_You_Love_Me_Tomorrow)

Any day! What a wonderful version of the song–I wish I’d been there, but I would have been about seven, I think…Thanks, Michael! (And hi, Michael!)

  3. Hey michael j and friend. This is great! Here’s another:

    What the world needs now,
    Is love, sweet love,
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of.
    What the world needs now,
    Is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.

Lord, we don’t need another mountain,
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb,
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross,
Enough to last ’til the end of time.

    What the world needs now,
    Is love, sweet love,
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of.
    What the world needs now,
    Is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.

Lord, we don’t need another meadow,
There are cornfields and wheatfields enough to grow,
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine,
Oh listen Lord, if you want to know…oh…

    What the world needs now,
    Is love, sweet love,
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of.
    What the world needs now,
    Is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some oh but just for every, every, everyone.

    What the world needs now,
    Is love, sweet love.
    What the world needs now,
    Is love, sweet love.
    What the world needs now,
    Is love, sweet love.

The great Burt Bacharach — but which version — the great Jackie De Shannon hit single or Bacharach’s great collaborator, Dione Warwick. Either are heaven.

    Big metta to you all,
    Steve

    Hi, Michael,

Well, you inspired me to go through my iTunes playlist and see what I have that works for this (oddly enough :), a whole lot of the songs I have now do!). But the one that really jumped out for now was “Today” by Jefferson Starship:

“Today I feel like pleasing you more than before
Today I know what I want to do but I don’t know what for
To be living for you is all I want to do
To be loving you it’ll all be there when my dreams come true
Today you’ll make me say that I somehow have changed
Today you’ll look into my eyes, I’m just not the same
To be anymore than all I am would be a lie
I’m so full of love I could burst apart and start to cry
Today everything you want, I swear it all will come true
Today I realize how much I’m in love with you
With you standing here I could tell the world what it means to love
To go on from here I can’t use words, they don’t say enough
    Please, please listen to me
It’s taken so long to come true
    And it’s all for you
    all for you…”

    What a great post!
